Fifty years ago the province Almería, a remote corner of Spain, was on the verge of becoming the next Hollywood.

‘Once Upon a Time in Almería’ depicts the legacy of the self-proclaimed “The Movie Capital of the World.” International stars—Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Peter O’Toole, Clint Eastwood, and many others—passed through the barren landscape. The photographs take the stance that the aura of Hollywood glamour was mostly fiction.

Mark Parascandola is a fine art photographer based in Washington DC and Almeria, Spain. A PhD epidemiologist by training, he uses photography to explore the interactions between human populations and the environment over time. He was awarded an Individual Artist Fellowship from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities 2014, Finalist for the Sondheim Prize 2011, and Finalist for Critical Mass 2015. Mark’s first photo book Carabanchel was released in 2014. Website: www,
